Artist: Marc Chagall
“For me a circus is a magic show that appears and disappears like a world. A circus is disturbing. It is profound.”
Marc Chagall was born in 1887 in what is now Belarus. In addition to being one of the leading modernist painters, he also produced mosaics, murals and stained-glass windows.
His works often blare like bright dreams, loaded with acrobats, animals and mythological creatures.
One of Chagall’s favorite inspirations was the circus.
“I think my painting style is a bit strange, it is not easy to understand, but it is lovely when you understand what I want to express in my paintings. I always say that art must be an expression of love and our feelings are very important so that we know how we feel about ourselves.”
Stained glass is an artform of particular interest to this ringmaster, and that medium was my doorway into Chagall. His stained glass blew me away — then I learned of his love for the circus.
Discovering his paintings felt like someone had made an art playlist just for me! Filled with all the things I would want to see. As he put it:
“These clowns, bareback riders and acrobats have made themselves at home in my visions. Why? Why am I so touched by their make-up and their grimaces? With them I can move towards new horizons.”
My personal pantheon of great artists will always have Marc Chagall at the top.
We do not have a reader question this week! Instead, I’ve taken the liberty of posing the query this time.
My question was for Wyatt Aussome, and this is what I asked:
“Wyatt, you and your Aussome Hogs are a crowd favorite. Fans often send me cool Ringmaster stuff, I wonder if you get hog- or pig-related items? And if so, do you have one you’d like to share?”
-Rex Ringmaster
Our Performer’s Answer:
The fans have been so sweet to us, I get so many wonderful cards and items and art. Plus they send treats and blankets for the hogs! I can’t thank our fans enough.
The best thing I’ve received was for sure the pig phone. I guess officially it’s called a Piggyphone, based on the artwork of Sandra Boynton.
It actually works! I had someone test it out. And though I don’t have a landline while on the road, I keep it with me as a cherished piece of memorabilia.
